What Is Bacteriostatic Water and Why Researchers Use It for Peptide Reconstitution
What is bacteriostatic water? Why its 0.9% benzyl alcohol preservative makes it the standard diluent for reconstituting multi-use research peptide vials.

Bacteriostatic water looks identical to plain sterile water, but the difference matters for any multi-use reconstituted vial: it contains a preservative that plain sterile water doesn't.
What Makes It "Bacteriostatic"
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. "Bacteriostatic" means it inhibits the growth of bacteria that could otherwise be introduced each time a vial is punctured and drawn from — it doesn't kill existing contamination the way a sterilizing agent would, but it prevents microbial growth from taking hold across repeated access to the same vial.
Why That Matters for a Multi-Use Vial
Every time a needle or pipette tip enters a vial, there's a small opportunity for microbial introduction. A single-use vial reconstituted with plain sterile water and used immediately doesn't need a preservative. But a reconstituted peptide vial that will be accessed multiple times over days or weeks needs something to keep that repeated access from turning into a contamination problem — that's exactly the role benzyl alcohol plays in bacteriostatic water.
Bacteriostatic Water vs. Sterile Water vs. Saline
- Bacteriostatic water — sterile water + 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Standard for multi-use reconstituted vials.
- Sterile water for injection — no preservative. Appropriate for single-use reconstitution where the full vial is used immediately.
- 0.9% saline — sterile water + sodium chloride to match physiological osmolality. Used in some contexts, but not typically the default diluent for peptide reconstitution in a research setting.
A Note on Benzyl Alcohol Sensitivity
Benzyl alcohol is well tolerated in the vast majority of contexts, but it's a chemical additive, and any research protocol involving cell culture should account for it as a variable — benzyl alcohol at sufficient concentration can affect cell culture systems, so its presence (versus plain sterile water) is a real methodological detail to control for, not just a packaging footnote.
How to Use It
Diluent should be added slowly down the inside wall of the vial — never injected directly onto the lyophilized powder, which can shear and denature the peptide under the force of the stream.
