What are research peptides, and what does "research use only" (RUO) actually mean? A plain-English guide to peptide basics, sourcing, and how to evaluate a supplier.

If you've landed here after searching "what are research peptides," the short answer is: they're short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up every protein in the body — synthesized in a lab and sold strictly for laboratory and preclinical research. What a Peptide Actually Is
A peptide is a chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds — chemically the same kind of bond that builds proteins, just shorter. The line between "peptide" and "protein" is fuzzy and mostly a matter of length: a handful of amino acids is generally called a peptide (DSIP is a nonapeptide, 9 residues; BPC-157 is a pentadecapeptide, 15 residues), while a chain of dozens or hundreds is usually called a protein. Research peptides are synthetic — built residue by residue in a lab, not extracted from an animal or plant source — which is what allows for the precision and lot-to-lot consistency that legitimate research requires.
What "Research Use Only" (RUO) Actually Means
"Research use only" is a regulatory framing, not a marketing phrase. It means a compound is sold for laboratory, in-vitro, and animal-model research — not for human or animal consumption, diagnosis, or treatment. RUO status exists because most research peptides have not gone through the clinical trial process required for a compound to be approved as a drug or supplement. Some, like tesamorelin, are FDA-approved for a specific indication; most are not approved for any human use at all. Selling and using them strictly within the RUO framing is both a regulatory requirement and, frankly, the only intellectually honest way to interact with a compound whose human safety and efficacy data may be thin or nonexistent.
Why These Compounds Get Studied
Research peptides are studied because many of them mimic or modulate signaling systems the body already uses — hormone receptors, growth factor pathways, neurotransmitter systems. Studying a synthetic analog lets researchers isolate and manipulate one piece of a biological system without the confounding variables of a whole intact organism's regulatory feedback loops (in cell culture) or with tighter experimental control than studying an endogenous hormone directly (in animal models). That's the actual scientific utility — not a shortcut to a therapeutic outcome, but a research tool for understanding mechanism.
How Research Peptides Are Named
Naming conventions vary widely and aren't always intuitive. Some names describe structure (pentadecapeptide = 15 residues). Some describe a proposed function discovered early in the compound's history, which may not reflect the full mechanistic picture (DSIP, "delta sleep-inducing peptide," was named for an early EEG finding, and the field has since found its mechanism is considerably more complicated — see What is DSIP?). Some are alphanumeric lab codes with no descriptive meaning at all (CJC-1295, BPC-157). There's no universal system, which is part of why understanding a compound's actual sequence and mechanism matters more than its name.
What to Look for in a Supplier
